Hello

I tried to install SP1 from the full download 4 times. Install fails and
rolls back even after I have run through all of the fixes in KB947366. These
four failed installs have taken about 16 hours in total. Boring.

Anyway, now my wireless adapter doesn't work and reinstalling the driver
doesn't fix it. It says cannot find file during the re-install.

Any ideas?

Uninstall the device in Device Manager, make sure you tick the 'Delete
all driver software' box. Then reinstall the driver.

After doing that, it detects the hardware again and tries to install the
driver then says "System cannot find the file specified" Same as before

Any other ideas?

Yes, I have downloaded and installed the latest driver. Windows detects the
hardware, and proceeds to install the driver. Install fails with "cannot find
the file specified"

Device manager has a yellow ! and reports "This device is not working
properly because Windows cannot load the drivers for this device (Code 31)"

I tried to install a Belkin USB wireless adapter - same message - Vista
findds the hardware, I browse to the new driver, it finds the driver but
cannot install - says "Cannot find the the specified file" although it
doesn't mention which file.

Looks like SP1 has changed permissions on something so the drive can't
install?

If I try to run the SP1 full install it gets to 98% on stage 1 of 3 then
fails and rolls back

Any more ideas please?

Windows firewall was already enabled of course!
Disabled Windows Defender and AVG Antivirus on startup using MSConfig

Install failed exactly the same - now reverting.

I have performed all of the recommended steps already.

I'm really looking to resolve the wireless adapter driver error.

Any other ideas?

I have a Belkin USB adaptor and you are supposed to install the software
and driver first and then plug the adaptor in. Did you do this ?

After consultation with Microsoft PSS this was the solution:

1. Restore from backup image to a known good configuration which in this
case was 1 month ago. Wireless now works fine.
2. Using MSCONFIG disable ALL startup services and progams. Reboot
3. Install SP1 OK
4. Re-enable the programs and services disabled in 2.
