SP1 disaster...

Auto update picked up and installed SP1 tonight.
When I cam back all seemed ok. Opened IE with no problem, opened Windows
Mail - blue screen -
It gave an 0x0000008E code and something about tcpip.sys.
I shut down and tried again - same when I opened Mail plus I realised all
sound had gone.

Then while taking out SP1 I got another blue screen -

"a process or thread crucial to the system operation has unexpectedly exited
or been terminated" 0x000000F4

I've carried on with the uninstall after the restart.

Other that run the sfc /scannow what should I do to see if all is back to
normal??

Guess I'll not bother with SP1 thanks.

New (from November 2007) fairly high spec Dell running Ultimate.

Thanks for that.

Does that work if I'm in the UK (up in the Highlands of Scotland)??

Is there an email support option?

Well, the link you even provided does state:

E-mail Support: No-charge

Individual Chat Requests: No-charge

Phone Support: No-charge

Microsoft is offering these FREE SP1 support options to
all Vista users, regardless if they have Retail or OEM versions!

I guess you're the one that is wrong!

Advanced support for which there is a charge."

READ all of it, you idiot

"Support for preinstalled products is available from Microsoft for a fee.
Some issues may require more Advanced support for which there is a charge."

Especially that part, you lying clown!

You have definitel crawled right up MS.
Yyou have always been a clown here, and this proves it.
ADMIT you are WRONG!

You an MVP? You are a disgrace!

I guess you have a reading comprehension issue.

The statement:

"If your Microsoft product was already installed on your computer
when you purchased it, contact your computer manufacturer to see
if no-charge support is available to you."

does not apply to SP1 since the Microsoft product being referred to
is SP1 and no PC manufacturer has shipped any PC with SP1!
In other words, the "product" is SP1 and not the Vista O/S itself.

And please read and try to comprehend:

"According to Microsoft, tech support lines have been beefed up to handle
issues related to SP1 beginning today. In a welcome change from the normal
policy, you can call for free support on SP1–related issues even if you
purchased
an OEM copy of Windows Vista preinstalled on a new computer. E-mail, chat,
and phone support are all available. Vista SP1 has its own dedicated support
page
(if you’re outside the U.S., you might need to start at
support.microsoft.com and
find the appropriate links for your country)."

I'll except your apology for your rude behavior in advance, thank-you.

I go for info from MS's sites, not your stupid sites.
You are just an ignorant, arrogant lying pig!

APOLOGISE clown!

"Mike Murphy" has some reading comprehension difficulties.
The Microsoft "product" is SP1, just as it is stated on the
SP1 support page. There is no OEM version of SP1. He would
be correct only if someone had a SP1 related issue if they had
a new computer that came preinstalled with Vista SP1, but those
PCs have not even shipped yet.

Mick,

So if Carey is wrong, can you not help to correct that without the insults?

I have not seen a single post from anyone who stated
they had just acquired a new computer with Vista
SP1 preinstalled that was having a SP1 installation
issue. Now why would that be? Because if they
have a new computer that came with Vista SP1
preinstalled, they can't possibly have a SP1
installation issue since SP1 is already preinstalled
by the PC supplier!

I think his anger management problems greatly exceed his reading
comprehension difficulties. It would also be refreshing to see him
admit when he is wrong.

If you want to try again try this:

Run Disk Cleanup, a complete virus scan, run chkdsk /f from a command
prompt to verify the condition of your HD, defrag the HD. Review Device
Manager and make sure that you have the latest and greatest drivers for
each device and the latest BIOS update, checking with your mainboard
vendor or computer vendor. Unplug all USB devices and exit every
startup process/application that you have control over before attempting
another install of SP1.

Since you live in the Highlands, feel free at any time to have a wee
dram of the water of life.

Hi Carey,

Didn't mean to indicate you were wrong or right, just the name calling was
unnecessary. I know if you were wrong on anything you would proudly stand
corrected. I do see now what you mean only at this time as SP-1 is a MS
related issue and has nothing to do with who installed the OS, it appears to
me you are correct and MS will support it until the OEM's start rolling out
SP-1 in their systems. It's my understanding OEM's will not ship SP-1 until
late March or early April.

That's strange. I know a guy who said he bought a machine with SP1
preinstalled a couple of weeks ago (UK). I'll ask him to clarify next time
he comes online on MSN Messenger.

I found this news a little old, but it was a interview with MS....

As a result, Microsoft said it would be mid-March before SP1 showed up for
download via Windows Update and Microsoft.com. That appears to be on track
and, what with mid-March now upon us, it seems likely that SP1 will be
available from Microsoft's servers very shortly.

Less clear, though, is when the OS update would replace the initial Vista on
retail shelves and on new PCs.

I pressed Microsoft for some answers here, but got only limited help. On the
retail front, Microsoft said in a statement on Monday that "we expect
Windows Vista with SP1 will be available as a full packaged retail product
as soon as April." So those making pre-orders for Vista SP1 on Amazon.com
may have to wait awhile longer to get the product (though people can always
buy Vista now and upgrade to SP1 on their own).

On the question of when PC makers would start offering new machines with
Service Pack 1 preloaded, Microsoft was even less forthcoming. Although PC
makers got the code in February, Microsoft said, "it takes time for our OEM
(Original Equipment Manufacturer) partners to update their assembly lines
with code."

"Our partners will begin distributing SP1 on new PCs when they are ready,"
Microsoft said. <<<

"Dude, you got a Dell."

These forums are full of Dell owners and their issues. You may want to try a
search on Dell and see what comes up. Also, you can search the SP1 forum at
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1992&SiteID=17
to see if there are any tips/tricks for Dell owners. You should treat that
other forum as "read only" and continue to post your questions in this forum.
