thanks.
Not to burst anyone's bubble, but if SP1's speed "improvement" isrelying
on the 2 performance updates that are listed as being included in SP1,
that I have ALREADY installed, then SP1 is gonna be a HUGE
disappointment.

I'd be happy if they could fix the frickin search issues when utilizing
indexing. Right now it's worse than without indexing on my 2 pc's.

Source?
I have seen may things, but nothing from an official source that said
that.

The best rumors I have heard for months have heard say late 2007 to
early 2008.
That seems to still be correct, but we will have to wait and see

SP1 will not offer any significant speed improvements. It will fix a few
security problems, the memory error, a small percent of performance and
stability problems as the two MSKBs for that already have (included in SP1)
and the vast majority of people who install it will be able to distinguish
that it has been installed about as well as a bunch of guys at a bar can
tell which of 10 different Vodka brands they are guzzling after several
doubles.

This is a serious assessment, rather than one done in jest after reading the
white paper and using SP1's alpha/beta already.

And a bunch more bloat too. The download is expected to be 1gig, and 7
gigs required as min free space on your HDD in order to install it (for
unpacking space).

I don't know that it was 'official', but if you check back through the
postings, you'll find that mentioned several times.

That is my point.
The "they" in your post is not speaking for Microsoft.
There are a variety of dates posted and have been for quite some time.
Microsoft seldom makes any official statements about release dates
this far in advance.
What we see are some simply guessing and others making educated
guesses.
Some sites thrive on being the first even if they have no proof, they
just want to be first.

I recall a few weeks ago they said 4th quarter 2007. Any bets?

No, Microsoft has *never* announced a date for Vista SP1--not "a few weeks
ago," not now, and not at any other time.

There have been *estimates* (not promises) by Microsoft (those have been
first half 2008 for some time now) and there are have been rumors
promulgated by others. Do *not* mix up estimates and rumors with promises.

Personally, I think Microsoft should avoid publishing all "planned for"
dates and estimates. The result of doing this is that people who should know
better, but for some reason don't, end up treating these estimates as if
they were promises. We then hear from them that Microsoft has failed to live
up to its promises again.

When they know exactly when something will be released, they should tell us
the date, and not before.

In recent years this seems to happen with every major product/update
released from Microsoft.
It seems some hear a rumor a few times and then translate that as fact
even though there is no fact, just speculation.

Yes, that's exactly my point. And it's because this happens with such
regularity that I wish Microsoft wouldn't even release planned or estimated
dates.
