Hi

Before I try it out I would like to know if it's possible to upgrade my
repository from SP1 to SP2 and still be able to build my SP1 images ?

Of course I have turned auto update components off.

Is there some issues I schould be aware off ?

What about installing SP1 QFE's after I upgraded to SP2 ?

Thomas,

Read trough this NG about this.

This is not supported by MS but you can do it.

Basicaly you will have to have two separate XPe database folders. SP1 and
SP2 (Two folders on your disk).
Then you should automate procedure that will setup DB to use one of these
folders before you start TD, CD, etc.

Actually, if he does upgrade his Configuration the TD build will use SP1 repository yet.
So, it is possible to still build old SP1 images with SP2 Toolkit.

It'd be hard however to create new or fix old SP1 images there.

Good point. I thought that he want to make separate projects on SP1 and SP2.

Mhh.. It would be best if I still could be able to fix old SP1 images !!!
But that could be a issue.

My ideal setup, would to have the SP1 and SP2 database and repository on a
server in the network, and then be able from my Target Desginer, to
build/create/fix SP1 and SP2 images.

But it schould be possible to have the SP2 database and repositiry on a
server, and then build from my workstation. So there is just one place to
apply QFE's etc.
Do you have any experience with this type of setup ??.. Does TD get even
slower with this ??

But before I start playing around with SP2, I have backed up my database and
the repository folder. Is this enough if I whant to go back to SP1 ? Or do I
need to backup more stuff ??

1. Just stop DB.
2. Copy whole "Windows Embedded Data" folder to safe place and that is it.

It would be nice if you could use SP1 and SP2 DB from TD at the same time
(whht some option), but for now you can't.

Feel free to ask for this option:

Yeah.. Call a script file from within the configuration that:
1: Stops the DB
2: Copy the SP1/SP2 "Windows Embedded Data" folder over the exiting one
3: Start the DB again
4: Build the image

He he :)

Thomas,

Beside the backup options that Slobodan has already covered for your post.

You can have a few SQL servers running on separate server machines. From the client you can easy switch between databases within the
CDM. Then you can have SP1 and SP22 environments on network.

Yes... That could be a solution. It schould be possible to have the
repository and database on two machines on the network. I think I will try
set this up.
But I'm not a big database, CMI etc. guru, so do you know any good links,
where I can read on this stuff ??
What i CDM ?

Thomas,

Well.. My point was that having two servers running on your network won't
require any deep knowledge on the setup. You just install SP1 database on
first server, SP2 - on second.
CDM - COmponent Database Manager. If you open it, you will see a feild there
to change the path to the database server. You can use it to easy switch
between databases (certainly, you will have to reload any XPe tool (TD, CD)
after you change the path).

KM

PS. You don't need to mess up with CMI - it is undocumented anyway - unless
you want to create some complex scripts for your custom components.
