My wife's Windows XP Home edition is an upgrade over ME. While she kept
up her critical updates, she never downloaded and applied SP 1.

1. Does she have to apply SP 1 before installing SP 2?
2. Will SP 2 work on an upgraded Win XP Home program such as my wife has?

Thank you.

You may apply SP2 directly over a fresh or upgraded install of XP Home
without previously applying any service packs or updates as the SP2 install
will update everything that is needed.

You should perform some maintenance on your system before applying SP2. See
this Microsoft web site and view the different web pages for more info.

It is not advisable to upgrade over an old windows. Betta backup all your
critical work files and clean install from XP CD. It will save you lots of

No - SP2 is comprehensive
2. Will SP 2 work on an upgraded Win XP Home program such as my wife has?

Yes
I would get the CD of it and run that, rather than trying download from
the Update site. It is now out on cover CDs and in Computer stores

1. No

2. Yes, in principle. Some suggestions:

A. Clean your computer of virus' and spyware before upgrading, possibly
defrag the hard drive.
B. Download the full 270 mb version, don't use the Windows Update
version. There seem to be fewer problems this way, although in
principle they should be the same
C. Shut down all running programs before running the update
D. If you have a Prescott CPU, update the BIOS first, and get a copy of
the Update.sys file from SP1, just in case you need it (not likely to be
an issue for you).
