Can I use my Windows Vista Sound Recorder to record sounds from a DVD that is
playing on the computer?

Is there any alternative to capturing the sound from the DVD playing OTHER
than a 3rd party download program?

Thanks

I would think a (stereo) jumper cable from low level output to line input
would do it.

Try Audacity it's free and works great.

I can choose "what you hear" as a option to record.
But I have a SB Audigy.

Your sound card may not do this.

This is very possible.... most people don't realize it. They resort to
stringing cables from Line Out to Line In (dumb!). In Vista right click on
your speaker icon and select Recording Devices. In the resulting window
right click on the Recording devices list and select "Show Disabled
Devices." You should now see "Stereo Mix" or "Wave Out" or something like
that. Right click and Enable it.

You can now use the Stereo Mix output as an input for recording (if your
sound card supports it... which they all do nowadays). You may need to
experiment with volume levels and stuff (exactly like the good ol' days of
cassette tape recording!!! ;) )

To actually record stuff I suggest you use Audicity. It's free.

I am daily amazed at the great tips I learn from here. I just tried it and
it worked so easily. Thanks

I love you CMoya. I spent a lot of time finding your answer to my problem.
I am one of those dumb people who came from XP and strung cables from
headphones to line in which I knew was stupid but I couldn't figure it out.
Microsoft was no help at all anywhere. How the heck would you know that? It
is utterly unfamiliar and not intuitive. Yet when you know it, it is so
simple. "Stereo Mix" is what to select. Microsoft help is often most
unhelpful. Thank you, thank you, thank you CMoya. xoxoxo.
