sound problem

About a month ago, I bought a used computer to replace my dead
computer.

One thing I have not managed to get working properly is the sound. It
came with an LCD monitor that has built-in speakers. They do not
produce any sound at all. I do have my old external speakers, which
work. But they seem to be fairly quiet. Full volume is nowhere near
what it was like on my old computer. I tried to watch a movie trailer,
and at full volume, I could barely hear the audio. It does play music
okay. I can hear it nicely as long as I am sitting at the computer.

When I checked the control panel, it states that the monitor is
working fine, but does not list a particular model. It does not have a
specific driver listed. I went to the website, and under drivers, it
had an inf file. It opened as a notepad file. That doesn't seem to be
a real driver. The computer was put together by the guy I bought it
from, and I have a box with CDs and manuals. It has a little booklet
for the monitor (no mention of the sound or any CD), but I could not
find anything else pertaining to the monitor.

Any suggestions?

The speakers are just like external speakers, but built into the monitor.
The monitor driver / inf file is unlikely to have any reference to the
speakers.
Monitor speakers are generally not terribly good quality units.
Ensure you have mobo chipset & other hw drivers installed from the cd's or
updated from manu sites.
Check all sound settings / controls
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers

You need to connect the LCD speakers to the PC separately. Sound is
not sent over the VGA/DVI cable.

Also, you need to know which type of sound jack you have connected the
speakers to. Most "standard" sound card can have two types of sound
outputs: Amplified Speaker out or Line-Out. Some card have a setting
option to turn the Amplified Speaker Out option on. Line-Out jack/
settings usually used to record from the PC or send to a home stereo
system amplifier.

That was the main problem. The guy I bought it from must have been
using his own external speakers. I found the cable for the sound in
the box for the motherboard, still tied with a twist tie, never used.

I can now use the monitor speakers, and they are a a little louder.
Useful for now, though I would prefer the ability to go louder. I like
the sound of my external speakers better, but they aren't as loud with
this computer. On my old computer, I never had the volume turned up
more than halfway.

I also found that I was able to get the volume up a bit higher in the
windows media player with its own volume control.

I will probably get some better speakers soon, but it is frustrating
to know that my external speakers worked a lot better with the old
computer. I know that they are better than what I am hearing right
now.

You still need to check the sound jack so as to make sure that it is
an "amplified" jack for speakers, not just a Line-Out.
