Sound Problem

David Kerridge

I have a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129 laptop, with Intel Celeron 2.40 GHz
CPU, with a 40GB hard drive, 256MB RAM. The OS is Windows XP Home. My
wife and I spend the winters in the Texas hill country to get away from
the snow and cold of our northern Michigan home.

I had a lock-up problem after trying to do a restore and had to take the
computer in to a repair shop. When I got it back, I noticed a couple
of things that were different, first rather than booting up directly to
my desktop screen, it boots up to a totally different screen. The
screen is split into three parts, there is a left and a right and a
bottom that goes all the way across the screen. The left has the
Microsoft Windows XP logo and says "To begin, click your user name".
The right side has an icon square with chess pieces in it and the name
"USER" to the right of the icon square. The bottom has a "Turn Off the
Computer" button on the left side and on the right side is the following
statement "After you log on, you can change accounts. Just go to
Control Panel and click USER ACCOUNTS.

As it is now, I click the User icon and after about 20 t0 30 seconds my
normal desktop appears. How can I get rid of this user screen? I went
into the Control Panel User Accounts, and found it to be very confusing,
so I didn't try it.

One other problem! When the dial up is activated, it always gave me
that familiar beep beep sound as it was dialing, but now it is mute,
all the other sounds seem to work, just the dial up doesn't work.

We are kind of out in the sticks here in Texas and I really don't want
to take this machine back to the "SHOP", they may really get it messed up.

Help! Dave Kerridge

as far as the boot up to your desktop screen try
start> run> control userpasswords2
uncheck the box for users must enter user name and password then click ok
concerning the dial up sounds go to control panel double click phone and
modem options click on the modems tab select the modem you are using and then
click properties. choose the modem tab in properties and make sure that the
speaker volume is turned on/up.
