Sound problem when upgrading to Windows XP

I recently upgraded my OS from Windows 2000 to XP and have since been
unable to get my sound working. Every time I play sound the speakers
emit this obnoxious noise that sounds like a woodpecker on speed.

I have an Abit SD7-533 motherboard with an onboard C-Media CMI8378/C3DX
sound card. The drivers packaged with the motherboard were sufficient
when I was running Windows 2000 but neither these drivers nor the 3 or
4 other driver versions I tested were able to make the sound work on my
new Windows XP.

Can anyone guess what the problem might be or give me another solution
idea? Thanks.

You might mean "changed" rather than "upgraded". Maybe even
"updated", but "upgrade" it is not. XP seeks to stupify the
windows interface for those that don't know what they're
doing. By already having 2K running, you were beyond this
need.

First uninstall the sound driver from add/remove programs.
Download the latest from C-Media's website, install the
latest DirectX (do it anyway, even if you already had that
version (9.c), reboot, then install the sound driver.

Next, if the problem persists, determine if it only happens
with certain audio formats and/or players, or all of them.

What other versions did you try? Don't use the ones from
Abit, get them from C-Media. Have there been any other
system changes?

A complete description of the system might help, including
all PCI cards and significant integrated motherboard
features. You might also look in Device Manager, see if
anything stands out.

If worst comes to worst, buy a sound card. It's not hard to
equal, let alone better, onboard audio with a $15 sound
card.

Was windows' installation clean? Did everything seem to go
ok? Did you uninstall the old drivers before installing
newer or different ones?

There's a hell of a lot more to XP than just that.

yes, it also has a few more security vulnerabilities, a
friendly reminder that it doesn't trust you enough to stop
running it's WGA piracy tool even after confirming it was a
valid installation, a castrated CD burning module redundant
to anyone with regular authoring software, and a host of
other useless bloatware additions. It is not an OS as much
as a host of limited attempts to look like they kept busy
for a few years.

What a nice, concise, and completely pointless counter.

More utterly mindless pig ignorant silly stuff.

Your pig ignorant drivel is even worse.
