Sound Not working

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

My sound isn't working. I don't know why! My sound card is installed and
showing in the device manager as working without any problems. If I go into
sounds and devices in Control Panel it says there is no audio device.

Everytime I log on, an unknown device tries to install but fails.

Any suggestions. I am running XP home, have tried uninstalling all sound
drivers and reinstalling but still not working. Short of reinstalling
everything (which I dont want to do) what can I do???

Are you sure you have the speakers plugged in correctly? Are the
speakers working and the volume turned up? Open the computer's volume
control applet (usually in the System Tray). Is anything muted? What
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? If the
answer to everything above is "yes", then troubleshoot by swapping out
one thing at a time, using known-good parts (speakers, sound card),
etc.
