sound icon in tray

On my system (HP Media Center, win XP SP2) I use TotalRecorder to record
stuff on the Internet. TotalRecorder takes over the computer sound devices
and I cannot display the sound icon in the tray. What I am looking for in
this situation is for a little program to sit in my tray to let me know if
my sound is active or muted. I like to mute the sounds when other people are
around but sometimes I forget to mute and the various alerts startle the
people. Is there such a program for me, bearing in mind I have
TotalRecorder, which it seems I MUST use to be able to record online. I know
this is strange considering this machine is a MEDIA CENTER but that is what
HP Techies told me if I want to record off the net.
TIA
Paul

You can always choose another playback/recording device (while still
using TR to record). Which you choose shouldn't have any effect on
having the volume icon in the sys tray.

And you believed them? Tsk, tsk...

Hotkeys might help. It uses the Page Up/Page Down and End keys (in
conjunction with the Windows key) to control the sound options. Apart from
this it's a useful program for launching your programs.

Have you tried opening "Multimedia" in your Control Panel and checking
the box in front of "Show volume control on the taskbar" on the Audio tab?

1. I do not have a "multimedia" panel.
2. The equivalent panel is "Sounds and Audio Devices"
3. The "Show Volume control in the taskbar" is grayed out since I installed
TotalTecorder.
4. If it was not grayed out I would not have asked the question here in the
first place.
5. Still no further forward on this question, which is "some program to
reside in the sys.bar to inform me if the sound is on or muted?
6. Thanks anyway for all your help.
