Hello All,

The sound and record icon disappeared in taskbar. I went to control panel
to see if the check mark was still there and it wasnt. I went to put a
check mark in and hte message said that it wasnt installed and to install it
from add/remove programs. The sound works fine but the volume adjustment
has to be done above were the checkmark should be in "sound and audio
devices" section of control panel. Any idea why im getting the error
message when the sound works but cant be adjusted from an icon that I cannot
get back onto the taskbar? I had tried uninstall and reinstall with the
most current drivers to no avail.

Thanks for Any Responses

Mine did that too - for no reason whatsoever! Go to Control Panel / Sound,
Speach... / ->Change the Speaker Settings. Just under the volume control is
a check box to place the icon in the toolbar. If that doesn't work go back to
the same place and click the Audio tab to change the "Default device" to
whatever you are using.

Thanks for the quick response,
I had tried your suggestions with no joy. The sound actually is working but
the volume control is not is in the taskbar to get to the adjustments for
all other functions for sound and there is only 1 device in the audio tab.
Any other thoughts?

Hello,

My understanding on this issue is that Sound Volume Control icon disappears
in taskbar. If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

Based on the description, I think there are some reasons may cause the
problem and I suggest you perform the following steps to isolate the issue
first:

Step 1: Uncheck the option of Hide inactive icons.

Please right-click taskbar, select Properties, uncheck Hide inactive icons.

Step 2: Clean Boot to check if the issue is caused by some third party
applications.

1. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

2. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.

3. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

4. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. *note that please make sure that you do not uncheck the Microsoft
services.

5. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

6. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

If this issue does NOT reoccur following the Selective Startup, please
continue these steps to find the exact cause:

1. Click Start, click Run, in the Open box type "MSCONFIG" (without the
quotation marks), and click OK.

2. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the Startup
tab or the Services tab.

3. Add one check mark at a time to the entries under the Startup tab or the
Services tab, and then restart each time to see if the additional entry
reproduces the original problem.

Step 3: Reinstall the drive of the audio in device management and check if
there is any yellow excalmatory mark beside the audio devices.

Step 4: Reinstall Audio Compression from Add/Remove programs.

Open the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove programs, select Windows setup,
then choose Audio Compression from the Multimedia section.

Step 5: If the issue persists, please help me to collect the detailed error
information when you put a check mark in the option of "Place volume icon
in the taskbar" in Control Panel-> Sounds and Audio devices. Or you can
get a screenshot of the error information and directly send to me at
(e-mail address removed) so that I can perform further research on this issue.

To take a screen shot
---------------------
a. Press the Pr Scrn key once on the keyboard when the error message
appears.
b. Click Start, go to Run, enter MSPAINT in the open dialog box, and then
Click OK.
c. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot to the canvas.
d. From the File menu, go to Save and save it as a JPG file.
e. Send the JPG file to me as an attachment.

Please take your time in trying the suggestions above and let me know the
result at your earliest convenience.

If you need any further assistance or have any concerns, please feel free
to let me know, and I will be glad to help.

Thank You for Your Response Amanda,
When going to the add and remove programs, then to windows components, the
multimedia section is not there. The sound is working but the volume
control when you try to put the icon in the taskbar it says that it is not
installed. The volume can be adjusted if you go the the section in control
panel for sound and audio devices(single slider) but you cant get the volume
control. It also appears that the sndvol32.exe file is missing or not
responsive.

Thank You Again

Amanda,
I had this problem on my laptop before when it was equipped with Win Prof
2000. After I installed XP the sound icon reappeared in the toolbar. But
after a day it was gone again. I followed the steps you suggested but the
sound icon did not reappear after restart. Your instructions did not allow
for that fact. In my sound and audio tab the "show sound icon in tool bar" is
checked. I have tried to uncheck it then check it again but still no luck.
What am I meant to do now?

there is any yellow excalmatory mark beside the audio devices.

Step 4: Reinstall Audio Compression from Add/Remove programs.

Open the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove programs, select Windows setup,
then choose Audio Compression from the Multimedia section.

Step 5: If the issue persists, please help me to collect the detailed
error
information when you put a check mark in the option of "Place volume icon
in the taskbar" in Control Panel-> Sounds and Audio devices. Or you can
get a screenshot of the error information and directly send to me at

Hello Again,

I have repaired the problem. I had to expand sndvol32.ex_ from the OS cd to
the c:\windows\system32 folder. I guess it crashed at one point or another.
But all is well. Again thank you for the support!!

Hello,

My understanding on this issue is that Sound Volume Control icon
disappears
in taskbar. If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

Based on the description, I think there are some reasons may cause the
problem and I suggest you perform the following steps to isolate the issue
first:

Step 1: Uncheck the option of Hide inactive icons.

Please right-click taskbar, select Properties, uncheck Hide inactive
icons.

Step 2: Clean Boot to check if the issue is caused by some third party
applications.

1. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

2. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to
select
the Selective Startup button.

3. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

4. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft
Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. *note that please make sure that you do not uncheck the
Microsoft
services.

5. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked
to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

6. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

If this issue does NOT reoccur following the Selective Startup, please
continue these steps to find the exact cause:

1. Click Start, click Run, in the Open box type "MSCONFIG" (without
the
quotation marks), and click OK.

2. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the
Startup
tab or the Services tab.

3. Add one check mark at a time to the entries under the Startup tab
or
the
Services tab, and then restart each time to see if the additional
entry
reproduces the original problem.

Hello,

Thanks for your post and let me know your similar question to the original
post here.

You've indicated that Windows volume control is not listed in the taskbar.
You had the problem before with Win Prof 2000 and after installed XP it
corrected itself. But only after a day, the issue returns and it still
persists now. I think the issue is a little bit complex and the situation
should be different from the original post here. Although we are glad to
give you the suggestions regarding the issue, based on our newsgroup's
process and policy, I suggest you can open another new post here so that we
can get the accurate error phenomenon on your side and give the exact
response to you on this issue.

Then I would give you some general steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Based on my experience, this issue can be caused by incorrect system
configuration or missing some system files. We can perform the following
steps to troubleshoot this issue.

Step 1 - You mentioned that you have checked the following System Setting
====

1. Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices

2. In the Volume tab, please check the checkbox beside "Place volume icon
in the taskbar".

3. Click ok to close this window.

Step 2 - Expand the sndvol32.exe file from the CD
====

1. Click Start, go to Run, type in "CMD" and press Enter.

2. In the command mode, type the following commands and press Enter after
each one:

CD C:\Windows\System32

REN sndvol32.exe sndvol32.old

Expand D:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ sndvol32.exe

Note: I am assuming D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM.

Step 3 - System Restore
====

You can try to use the System Restore function as Parker said and this
method has resolved his issue.

Perform a System Restore to be back to the initial status or other correct
state.

Note: if you have some important documents or files which are created after
the restore point, please copy them to My Document. As this, even if you
are back to the initial status, they are still remained in My Documents.

To restore your system to a previous state, we can use the following steps:

1. Before you start, please close all open files and close all open
programs.
2. Click "Start"; Click "Programs or All Programs"; Click "Accessories";
Click "System Tools"; Click "System Restore". The System Restore user
interface should appear.
3. Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click "Next".
4. From the restore points available, select an appropriate restore point
when your system is working correctly and click "Next".
5. Click "Next" again. The restore process will run and your system will
restart automatically.
6. After restarting, check whether your system functions correctly now. If
not, you can undo your last restoration or select another restore point in
System Restore user interface.

HTH and thanks for your understanding!

Thanks & Regards

Amanda,
I had this problem on my laptop before when it was equipped with Win Prof

Hello,

My understanding on this issue is that Sound Volume Control icon
disappears
in taskbar. If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.
