sound gone

I have no sound, even from the system speaker. In using
the troubleshooter I find that the default device for
both playback and recording is NVIDIA(R)nForce(TM)Audio,
but this is not listed by device manager. The closest
thing is NV...Audio Codec Interface, which I assume is
not the same. I have the XP CD and a NVIDIA folder on my
hard drive. How can I restore the default device?

Bob, take a look in the Bios and make sure that the audio device is
enabled. Usually pressing Delete button
on Startup will get you in.

I find nothing in Bios that is clearly the audio device, but everything that
might be is either enabled or auto. So what do I do now? Thanks for your
help.

Did you look in control panel---administrative tools ---services---WINDOWS
AUDIO?

Windows Audio is started and is automatic startup type. The same is true of
its dependencies Plug and Play and Remote Procedure Call.

Thanks, guys, for your attempt to help. I really hate to admit it but the
whole problem was caused by plugging my speakers into the wrong port. The
right connection is green not blue. How can anyone be so DUMB? Anyway it's
now all OK, and thanks again.
