Just did a clean install of XP Home on a Soyo K7VDA mobo
with integrated VIA AC97 sound. Immediately applied
security updates from the CD sent by Microsoft, also
updated to MediaPlayer9 and DirectX 9. Sound events will
not play. At the control panel site it is set for default
scheme. Click on any event and try the preview, it acts
like it is playing forever, a file that should be done in
a second goes until I hit to stop the preview. Browse for
other sounds, same thing. Under media player, call up
these sound files, no sound. BUT when I play something
else in media player, like the sample music, then
whatever I was last trying to preview at the control
panel site plays before the music starts. Then the
sound events work normally, until I exit media player. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled the AC97 and the drivers
multiple times. What could be hanging the sound event
until released by media player?
