No sound will come out of the computer. I went to device manager and it said
all the sound components are not working correctly. I've tried to do system
restore several times and the sound still won't work. I don't want to have to
reboot the whole computer and have everything deleted again. Please help.

1. What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

2. Since Device Manager reports that the device is not working
correctly, try to reinstall your sound card drivers. Get the drivers
from the sound card mftr.'s website or, if you have an OEM machine
(Sony, Dell, HP, etc.) get them from the OEM's website for your
specific model computer.

3. If reinstalling the drivers does not work, perhaps your sound card
has died. Test by swapping out with a known working one.

If the above troubleshooting steps seem daunting, there is no shame in
admitting that and taking the machine to a computer repair shop (not
your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
