Sound control not on task bar

The sound control periodically disappears from the task bar and I don't know
why. I've tried to put it back on by going to the Control Panel and
unchecking the option to put the sound control on the task bar, then
checking again and clicking on apply...but still no fix. The only way I can
fix it is to reboot. This doesn't always happen but often enough to be
really, really annoying. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Have you got you systray set to hide inactive icons?
right click taskbar choose properties check for tick in Hide inactive icons,
and click the customize button next to it to see if you have the sound icon
set to hide if its inactive.

I had already thought of that...and checked both possibilities. That's not
the problem. Also...sometimes the reboot fixes things and some times it
does not. What usually fixes it is to uncheck the option that allows you to
put the sound icon on the task bar, apply the change then go BACK to the
same check box, check the "put the sound icon on the task bar option"
again..and they click "apply" and voila, the sound icon is back on the task
bar. However, it only lasts for short time. I've run out of ideas. My
best guess is that some other program I'm using is involved somehow. This
is not a new thing as it's happened sporadically ever since I upgraded to
Windows XP. It's just that I'm just now getting around to fixing it.
Perhaps it's a problem associated with an XP update or fix that I
downloaded.
