Please help, my computer has been reformatted and works great-but I hooked
speakers to it and cant even hear system sounds... what do i do- it was
previously owned by a teenager who had the bomb speakers and played music all
the time. Cant hear a cd playing or startup and shut down sound and does not
recognize hardware

Your system does not have sound card drivers installed.. you must first
identify what make, model and type of sound card is installed.. this program
can help determine the above..

Everest Home.. http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?lang=en

Now you have to visit the sound card manufacturer web site, and download the
appropriate XP drivers for the installed card

Good luck

Have you re-installed the correct WinXP-specific audio drivers
supplied by the sound card's manufacturer?
