Sound Card Locking up on App Shutdown

I am running Windows XP on a relatively new Dell Inspiron 5100
computer. System sounds work until I shut down an application. When I
re-open it later, sounds disappear. Everything works if I reboot.

Feedback from a previous post suggest the sound card is locking up on
App shutdown. Is there a fix for this?

Also, it was suggested that I make sure the sound card drivers are up
to date. How do I do this?

Since the computer is relatively new, you will need to contact Dell.
Typically some computer manufacturers have a certain area of thier website
dedicated to driver downloads, etc. The Windows Update can also provide you
with neccessary driver updates.
