After upgrading a win98 machine to XP Home, the sound card doesn't work
anymore.
I tried reinstalling the drivers for XP. In the device manager, I have no
problem for the sound card but it says that the device work but the drivers
coudn't start.

I tried another card, same result.

Any idea ?

I did try it and now things are worse.
No sound, computer slow, very slow and can't restore getting an error
message that my computer is not protected and I have to restart and try
restoration again.

I did try last known good configuration, no luck.

What can I do now ?

Did you run the XP Upgrade Advisor before upgrading your computer? A
computer that was designed for Windows 98 may not be adequate for XP.
Did you install all drivers - motherboard, video, audio, etc.?

The error that your computer is not protected is because you either
don't have an antivirus installed or the one you have needs to be
updated to work with the XP SP2 Security Center.

We need to have more information about your computer in order to help
you. It can be very hard for a non-technical person to know what to
include in a post to a tech support newsgroup. Here is a link that will
help you with that - http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm
