Ive just brought a laptop with Vista on.
When i brought it, it already had Windows Media Center and CyberLink
PowerDVD installed on it, and both were working fine. Over the past couple of
days ive installed Quicktime 7 and i also installed a codec pack because i
was having trouble playing videos that i had put onto my laptop from my phone.
I now cant watch a DVD in either program, im getting the sound but the
screen is blank ( black). Ive tried uninstalling Quicktime and ive also done
a system restore but nothing has worked.
Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening or what ive done?

Ah ha, another example of the evil that codec packs do!

What codec pack? Have you tried to uninstall the codec pack? Are there any any
reports in Control Panel (Classic view) > Problem Reports and Solutions?

When you need a codec you should ONLY download and install that specific Vista
compatible codec that is needed. And only from the manufacturer of that codec.
Avoid codec packs at all costs.

You can download a free little utility called GSpot (Google for it) that will
analyze the clip and tell you what codec you need.

Here is another useful site for codec information:

I didnt even realise those problem reports existed ha ha.

Yes there are problems in there and 1 of them is for the 3gp video
converter, its says theres a compatibility problem

Right ive uninstalled the codec pack and sent a report to Microsoft as there
was a problem showing on the computer. But its still not working?

In Control Panel > Problem Reports and Solutions > View problem history > right
click on the problem and select "View problem details". Then use the "Copy to
clipboard" link in the lower left corner of the Details window and paste into a
reply to this thread.

What codec pack did you install?

Sara1210,

You have been given excellent advice by Cal Bear. I suggest you listen
to him and avoid any and all "codec packs". If you must use a codec pack for
some reason you should only download and install the specific codec you need,
as also suggested by Cal Bear.
The damage codec packs do can remain long after you have uninstalled
them. I would suggest a system restore.
Have a nice day.
