Sorting

When I am sorting a column by rows, the first row cell is being treated as a
column header, why is that
 
When you select Data->Sort, there is a choice at the bottom of the page that
reads

MY LIST HAS ...

You obviously have HEADER ROW selected.
 
Excel does its best to guess what your data is and what your header is.

You could help excel guess better by giving the headers a different
format--bold???
