sorting by file name.

When trying to sort a directory by file name, it appears windows XP will only
sort up to the first 2 characters of the file name. is there a way to
increase this to encompass 20 or so characters? This machine was upgraded
from windows 2000 to xp. funny enough 2000 could sort up to the first 15
characters of a file name.
