sort distances in feet and inches

I am a track coach and I keep track of all times and
distances in Excel. I created a Macro to sort my running
event times (ascending) and my field event distances
(descending). All of my times sort fine, but I have not
been able to sort the distances (we use feet and inches).
Is there a way I can do this?

How are you inputting the feet and inches?

What type is the data? Text? Numeric?

An example of the above would help.

Chip Pearson has a page on Arithmetic using Feet and Inches.

Might be some assistance there.
