My girlfriend's got a laptop with these specifications:

-------------------------------------------------
SONY PCG-Z600TEK

Windows XP Professional.
P3 700MHz

Video Card:
ATI RAGE MOBILITY-M1 AGP
CD-ROM Drive:
TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-7002Bc SCSI
Modem:
Conexant SoftK56 Data,Fax PCI Modem
Network Card:
Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100)
Sound Card:
YAMAHA DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC (WDM)

Current BIOS Version:
R0203Z3 / RK203Z3

autoexec.bat
MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD /M:12 /V /L:G

config.sys
DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
DEVICE=VA16365.sys /ne
DEVICE=VA16CD.SYS /D:MSCD

-------------------------------------------------

However when she plays MP3s through Windows Media Player the songs jump/skip
a lot. This is a

very serious problem.

Recently we bought a ARTEC DVD & REWRITABLE CD DRIVE, Model - ARTEC 52X
EXTERNAL. When we

play DVD movies it's fine but frequently the movie slows down and goes
jerky. Very annoying.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

You do have something wrong !

WinXP does NOT use CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT !

So what did you or her do to the platform ?

BTW: I support numerous Sony Vaio notebooks. They are CRAP !

Hey Dave, tell us what you really think of Sony notebooks.....<g>

Have to agree with you. Actually even the Sony desktops have gone to
the dogs. (Please excuse the expression - all you animal lovers)

Better to say they've gone to the cats :-)
I like dogs but cars...they make good dog FOOD.

How did you install the dvd and cd-rw? What drivers got installed. Today, must DVD and CD devices are plug-n-play, their really isn't a reason to be using MSCDEX for XP to recognize the devices.

Wish someone had told me that 3 years ago after spending $2800 for a Vaio
XG-9....Lets see, screen died twice, Screen Driver board died once, Keyboard
died one time and lucky if I can get 200 charge/recharge cycles out of the
battery.
However one good point..Almost got all my program data off this bomb and on
to a new laptop (not Sony...) after that I think a small dose of C-4 will
help the Vaio out greatly :-)
