Whenever I try to start Movie Maker on my Sony Vaio I get the error "
"Windows Movie Maker has determined that your computer does not contain
audio hardware that is necessary for the application". The computer is
perfectly capable of playing audio. Does anyone know of a solution to this
problem?

There is only one article in the KB for the error message you are receiving:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269591/en-us

The article is oblique, and vaguely indicates it maybe other hardware
issues that may be the cause?
There are a total of 178 articles in the KB under heading of WMM:

Ensure your PC has all updates installed, inc SP2.
Try Sony support for your global location. (Type it into google)
