Somewhat off topic: Win XP getting sluggish

Sorry for being off topic, but this is obviously very important for us
developers.

Got a new laptop just a few months ago, and everything including VS.NET
and SQL 2000 ran pretty fast. But now it has gotten increasingly
sluggish, and I am having to reboot more often.

Not knowing much about the Windows kernel (XP in my case) we all know
that over time, the OS accumulates "sludge" over time.

There are products out there that promise to address such problems. One
product claims to optimize the registry, for example, which is supposed
to help.

What are some practical things to do, short of reinstalling XP, which
isn't really an option for me? Are there reliable products out there
that really do clean up the "sludge"? I am willing to pay good money
for this. And please, no spam.

This could be due to any number of things. Slow performance almost always
involves heavy IO usage (disk reads/writes). Is your hard disk getting full?
Has it been defragmented recently? What new software has been installed
recently? Have you looked at your Task Manager to see how many and what kind
of processes are running?
