I'm on a small LAN (e.g., three PC's -- say Alpha, Bravo, & Charlie) and
something unusual has started to happen which has never happened before ---

I'm trying to save a MS Word document called "Jamie" from PC Charlie to PC
Bravo, specifically to a mapped drive (that is the C drive of PC Bravo, but
which shows up as Drive K on PC Charlie).

I am trying to save to a folder which is K:\Data\Word\General\

However, I get a MS Word pop-up window that says:
The folder 'K:\Data\Word\General\Jamie' isn't accessible. The folder may be
located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password.

The C drive of PC Bravo is a shared drive, and has been that way for a long
time. So why is there a suddenly a difficulty saving to it?! This problem
is intermittent, but is happening frequently!!!???

BTW, both PC's use MS Word 97. PC Bravo = Win 98, and PC Charlie = Win XP.

Also,

Word will save if I let it use the default file name that Word suggests!!
If I try to use the name I want, no cigar.

PC Bravo = Win 98SE.

Weird!!!

Maybe the name you were trying to use had an illegal character in it. Could
you save it to a local folder with the same name?

Yes -- no problem saving to a local folder. In order to get it to save on
PC Bravo, I could not choose any name other than the default suggested.

I'd suspect a problem with the NETBIOS configuration on one of the machines.
Make sure NETBIOS over TCP/IP is specifically enabled on all the machines.
Another trick that sometimes clears up NETBIOS problems on small networks
with mixed clients is to use IPX/SPX for file sharing and TCP/IP for
internet only.

Another thing to try if you are behind a router is to turn off the firewall
on all the computers. If this works then you have to figure out what ports
you need to open up and re-enable the firewalls.

Another possibility is Word itself. Can you save to the network share with
other programs other than Microsoft programs? If you can then it's probably
something to do with Word.

Well, well -- an interesting discovery --

The problem exists with all my MS Office 97 programs - Word, Excel, Power
Point, but not with graphics programs like PhotoImpact, or with Notepad or
Wordpad.
