Something to think about???

Did you ever think who has the most to gain from a new virus??? Thats right,
the companys that sell virus software, like norton etc.... If there was not a
new threat, why would any one purcase their software or updates??? Also did
you ever notice who are the biggest spammers on the web, virus software
companys. Did you ever report a Mcvee or Norton for spaming and get even a
response let alone any results???? For some reason, Norton and other virus
companys spam just slips past most spam blockers and providers like aol, msn,
yahoo cannot or refuse to do any thing about it. So now, who do you think
is starting and spreading all of those worms and virus???

there should be an faq about this...

it is true that av software companies benefit, that doesn't mean
they're responsible...

ummm no they aren't...

ok, here's an insult for you... you're a moron...

those spam emails, while for anti-virus products, where not sent by the
companies in question and the companies in question attempted to (and
as far as i can tell succeeded to some extent, since i no longer see
norton system works spam) in cracking down on those third party
resellers who were spamming their products...
For some reason, Norton and other virus
companys spam just slips past most spam blockers and providers like aol, msn,
yahoo cannot or refuse to do any thing about it.

i suspect they're already doing as much as they can with the tools they
have available to deal with the general spam problem...
So now, who do you think
is starting and spreading all of those worms and virus???

not the av companies... here's why... the appearance of moral high
ground is too important for their business... if one company did what
you're suggesting another company would blow the whistle on them in
order to try and gain more customers for themselves...

while it's a nice (although not particularly imaginative or original)
conspiracy theory, it does not hold water when you take into account
the business environment av companies operate in... and frankly, if you
weren't such an outsider, you'd know better - there is a community of
individuals (called the VX {for Virus eXchange} community) who create
viruses (and yes, release them aswell) as a hobby...

It depends on the virus or worm in question. Hackers can benefit
from some that install backdoors, or be "hurt" by ones that cause
their favorite security holes to be addressed and closed by the
administrators. Spammers can prosper tremendously from the ones
that install mail proxy spambots, and an unnamed entity could even
prosper from dDoS zombie machines at their disposal for attacking
whatever fits their current agenda.

If a new virus causes everyone to stand up and take responibility
for the proper administration of their own machine, it could even
be said that we, as a community, all prosper.
Thats right, the companys that sell virus software, like norton etc...

Those are *anti*-virus software companies, and I'm sure they could
find another software venue if viruses were to suddenly disappear
from the scene.

To guard better against the old ones?
Yes, I see your point, and the whole idea of "why sell a perfect
mechanism when you could make more money selling repair parts
for an imperfect one" does seem to play a role in this scenario too.

I thought Viagra was more into the hardware business...
