Something like Gator?

M

Melissa

I just had to remove Gator and some other adware from my computer because
it was slowing it down by about 50% and tying up the CPU when I needed to
use it, causing it to take 3 minutes to boot instead of 1 minute, and it
had spyware in it too. I used the free version of Ad-aware to remove it all
and my computer is back to running like new now.

But I liked the fact that Gator could keep my passwords and fill them in
for me.

Is there any shareware or freeware like that, which is encrypted, uses a
password and will keep your passwords and logins, and fill them in for you
like that? But not adware or spyware?

It's a matter of personal opinion, but I think you are better off without
Gator. If you want to know all the bad stuff Gator is / was doing to your
system, go to
www.doxdesk.com/parasites
and see for yourself what sleazy programs are out there. On the other hand,
if you don't object to having everything known about you shared with
everyone in the world, being bombarded with ads to change parts of your body
(whether you have them or not) and being redirected to porno sites, by all
means, keep Gator on your system. You should also add Bonzi Buddy,
WeatherBug and Xupiter just to be sure you are receiving lots of free junk
mail.

I have a computer consulting company and better than half my business comes
from people whose computers are on the verge of uselessness from all these
parasite programs. When you computer quits working, I hope you can restore
it, or know someone who can.

As to keeping your passwords safe, don't trust ANYTHING that fills them in
automatically. If it's recorded somewhere in a program, it is susceptible to
hacking. If you need a password, it must be secure information. Keep it
secure. If you've got to store it on your computer, store it in an encrypted
file, like PGP encryption, unlock it when you need it, then securely destroy
the plain text version when you are done leaving only the encrypted version
behind.

Unless you are filling in 100's of logins/passwords a day
it just does not seem worth having the computer
remember the logins/passwords. Don't be so lazy. Be safe.

I agree with the other replies, but you can use the Autocomplete feature
in IE to do this. I don't recommend it though, for the same reasons as
the others; why have passwords at all if not for a measure of security?

I know that, that's why I was asking for something better and different.

Dude, that wasn't what I posted about.

This is beside the point, I JUST said that I got rid of Gator.

I've heard that Roboform does the sort of thing you're looking for
without any spyware. I haven't used it, so can't comment on how good it
is, but this program was mentioned on TechTV's The ScreenSavers show.

Isn't Communicator rather old? What about trying Mozilla instead
(www.mozilla.org)? The full version of Mozilla (browser, mail, webpage
creator, etc.) has a forms manager built in. I don't know if the
standalone browser (Firebird) does or not, but you could check it out.

Yes and I'm still using it because stupid Netscape won't offer the same
bookmarks functionality in any of their newer browsers.

Does anyone know of an add-on that will do that? Give me the same bookmarks
functionality as Navigator, if I use it in Netscape 7.1?

Last time I tried Mozilla, they had a 512k limit on bookmarks file size. I
use bookmarks like a vast repository where I toss everything interesting
and do a word search to find it later. My bookmarks file is around 800k.
