VPN will not connect to pptp server.

I have done everything and tried everything that I can think off.
Obvious answers like port forwarding etc.

It is a fault in my desktop registry or XP SP2 somewhere. I have looked

a many reg keys. I can see the connection going out to the server but
nothing happens after that except 800 or 651 error. I have been to
every website I know of discuusing this, none can help.

It is not a problem connecting to the server, since the laptop I have
is setup the exact same as the desktop except for build (both are XP
SP2 but internals are different) and it connects to the exact same
server routing through my exact same router with no port forwarding. So
does another older laptop running W2K.

I have even ran the pptpclnt and pptpsrv test programs from within my
Lan between the desktop and laptop and get the proper responses back
that I am supposed to get.

If you can help me fix this problem then you can be assured that you
are the Master at Windows VPN problems.

Thank you.

do you have any security software running on the problem computer? check if the computer have IPSec and ProSafe running.

No.It is a pptp vpn, but no security software is running whatsoever
that I can see. Nothing shows up all the usual stertup plasce. I have
checked the services and drivers and nothing there either, but it there
was security software, it would affect the pptpsrv and pptpclnt
programs also, would it not.
The only thing I can see is that the wan pptp miniport is set to
manual, but again, if that was switched off, surely pptpsrv and
pptpclnt would not work!

I need to know the process of connecting to a pptp vpn server so I can
troubleshoot more.

Thank you.

I did a fresh new install of XP with sp2 slipstreamed into it, onto a
different partition, and I installed my USB WIFI adapter. I did not
install anything else. I connected straight away to the same server
that I could not connect to with my original XP. Something is broken in
my original XP. Thing is I cannot wipe my old installation. It will
just take too long to get everything back the way I want it.

Thanks again.

Any further progress on this one? I have much the same issue.

Two XP connected via a Linksys router. Both fully up to date with service
packs.
One can connect no problem.
Other cannot connect but seems to try to.
Can ping the target with out any problem.
Full reinstall just a few months back. No problem running the Cisco VPN
client but straight MS PPTP don't work.

Any pointers would be useful.

Chris.
