"Unknown error" is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off your antivirus email scanning function does not resolve
your problem, consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it
is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly intrusive antivirus
programs: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

....Sorry to interrupt but I can't find the thread I was using to talk to
Gary. Gary, Ya did it!!! YOu deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for working with
a knuclehead like me! I finally got Mail going. YEEESSSS!! I could not have
done it without you. You are saviour in both the TIME AND EFFORT you put in.
Two questions , and only when you get the opportunity:
First, how do I start a new post? The dialog box won't appear for a new
question or comment. Just a noise and that's it. I only have a dialog box
when I use REPLY. And it's kinda rude jumping in to someone else's post.
Secondly, how can you require a password to Logon to Mail but not have it
ask you for one when you send mail?
Can't thank you enough Gary.

You are talking about the web interface for this forum (actually a newsgroup).
The web interface is known to be very buggy, which is why we responders
don't use it. It is much better to use the very nice newsgroup reader that
comes included with Windows Mail. See if you can open this link:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail

Windows Mail does not have a feature to require a password for access.
Those requiring privacy need to set up their own Windows user login, then
log out when done using the computer.

Hi Gary,
#1: I tried the address. No luck. Have another one??? Just hate
"barging" in on someone else.
#2 You misunderstood me. Yes, you logon when you turn your computer on. I
have a logon window that appears when I open Mail. The user name and
password are different than when I turn the computer on. What I want to do:
Require logon when I open Mail. I don't want a Logon when I attempt to send
an email. Is that what Tools,Accounts,Properties,Highlight Pop.Gmail.com,
Servers is for??? AS ALWAYS, THANKS GARY

Hi Gary,
Quick clarification to my last post. It appears that the logon box appears
without rhyme or reason. The exception: if I check "remember password" under
Accts, Tools, Servers.
What I'm getting at is I wouldn't mind having Mail password protected but it
seems stupid when it asks me again before it will send an email I just
composed. I mean, I had to logon to access Mail. Why ask me again to send
an email.
Thanks, Gary

There is no password option for Windows Mail.
The only password required is to access your email server.

Well, that makes sense. Thanks, Dave.

1. Let's try this another way. In Windows Mail, on the left side where the
mail folders are, you should see "Microsoft Communities".
Double-click on it. It should offer to download newsgroups. After it does,
type in microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail . Click Subscribe, then 'Go to'.

2. Windows Mail does not have an option for access password.
