Solution Explorer and Properties windows moved!!!

I am brand new to visual studio, going through a teach yourself book...

After creating a few simple projects, suddenly the Solution Explorer was
gone, same with Properties. I found them under View but now can't make them
move back to the right of the Visual Studio window - they either suddenly
take over the top half of the window, or they float. They started off to
the right, with the Solution Explorer on top and Properties below that.

How did I change this and how do I put it back?

I moved the Properties window out of the way and it suddenly snapped back
into the right place.

I then changed the Solution Explorer from floating to dockable and was able
to put it back on the right also.

But I still don't know how or why it changed in the first place!

Also, in the Start window it lists previous projects, but when I click on
them to open them, nothing happens. Should it? It seems that I should be
able to open them there. And the list doesn't show all of my projects
either.

And ideas?
