SoftwareDistribution folder

Hi,
I need to recover space in a HD running XP SP1 with the latest updates, and
everything works well. I have read that one can delete all the
$NtUninstall... folders, but I also find that most of these updates still
reside in the SoftwareDistribution folder. I do not know, however, if they
are still in use or are they "forgotten" there and thus could be deleted. I
am looking more specifically at the SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. I
was under the impression that once the updates were installed that all
pertinent files would be copied to System32 or dllcache folders. Am I wrong?
Does anybody know if this is safe to do?
TIA

Yes, once the updates are installed you can delete the contents of that
download folder.

Thank you sir. I have it backed up just in case, but was afraid that maybe
the pc wouldn't boot or something troublesome like that.

You're welcome. In the future if you're not sure just move the files
elsewhere. Then after awhile if everything works ok you can delete them.
