Software Restriction Policy

Tim Sutor

Just recently I have been prevented from using a couple of applications on my pc and the following message appears whenever I attempt to open the programmes.

Windows cannot open this programme because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy. For more information open Event Viewer or contact system administrator.

One of the applications is System Mechanics 6 and, on the advice of Iolo, I have re-loaded this programme but to no avail.

Will greatly appreciate any advice on how to fix this problem.

Try disabling System Mechanics 6 .

If some action is being prevented by a system policy, the first thing
to do would be to contact your network administrator and determine if
this is supposed to be so. I can certainly understand why an IT
department wouldn't want System Mechanic on any of the computers they
maintain.

Hi Bruce,

Sorry if I am being dense but as my pc is only used at home by me and my wife, aren't I the system administrator? The machine is fairly old and second hand.

Might be a long shot but look in the Group Policy Snap-in to see if
there ia a Software Restriction Policy in place. To start the Group
Policy snap-in enter gpedit.msc in the Start Menu Run box.

True enough, but you'd left out that key bit of information from your
original post, and the mention of any system policy naturally leads one
to think of a business network and a domain administrator.

The machine is fairly old and second hand.

Second hand? Another key bit of information. Was it obtained from a
source that may have set security policies of which you're unaware?
Have you formatted the hard drive and re-installed WinXP since obtaining
the computer? With second-hand computers, perhaps even if acquired from
a family member or friend, but *especially* if acquired from a stranger,
the wisest course of action would definitely be to format the hard
drives and start fresh. She doesn't want to get in trouble because the
original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have
problems because the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or
other malware.
