I recently upgraded to XP Pro with a clean install. I now find that some
software that I used before and can still install on my laptop running XP
home come up with the following Error window.

Title Bar = 16 bit windows Subsystem

Error message reads:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.

It the gives Two options, Close and Ignore.

Whichever of the options you choose it closed the install. I have tried
System recovery to the initial installation with no luck. I have tried to
find the file but can only find it in the windows\repair folder but no matter
what i do it is still the same.

SP 1 & 2 are installed.

Help before the wife kills me!!

Checked out both sites. Both will work initially but every time i restart the
AUTOEXEC.NT file disappears again. I tried searching for the WINDUPDATE file
but could not find it however, i did find a few entries in the registry keys
which i deleted. Any other ideas would be appreciated as it is a pain
reinstalling the autoexec file everytime.

I read somewhere that after installing the autoexec file make it read only
and it will stay.

I seem to have found the problem. I installed adware X eliminator and that
program installed a file called windows Adtools when i updated it. I did a
detailed search of all files and found the phrase WIND UPDATE in one of the
files for this. deleted all entries in the registry and uninstalled the
program and now it works fine.

Many thanks to Wesley and Ricky for their help. I can go to my bed now, she
will be happy again.
