software firewall that works with router

I have a network running win.xp and win.98, on a broadband router, with firewall. I have seen a lot of traffic trying to get into my system, and enabled winxp Internet connection firewall, but now I cannot see or share the other system on the network, I even installed Norton’s firewall on the system, but I can not use the network, is there any firewall that will work with a router. I need more protection then the router is provieding me.

XP's Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is designed for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Since you have a broadband
router, ICF doesn't provide any additional protection from Internet
hackers, and I recommend disabling it.

Configure Norton's firewall to allow access by computers on your local
area network and to block access by all other computers.

The broadband router blocks all types of undesired incoming traffic
from the Internet. What it can't do (and neither can ICF) is block
undesired outgoing traffic from your computers to the Internet. That
type of traffic can come from viruses or worms that get into your
computers. Configure Norton's firewall to block undesired outgoing
traffic.

Since both the Internet and your LAN are using the same Network Card you
cannot use host adapter as a secure interface. Instead enter the IP address
range of your LAN as the trusted IP range. I use ADSL and this is always a
trap when I forget it.
