I recently upgraded from Windows Me to XP Home Ed. on my
Dell Dimension 8200. I am haing problems with some
applications closing w/o a request. For instance, I open
McAfee VirusScan (for XP!) and it closes within 10
seconds. It also happens with regedit. Do I have to
reconfigure something? I tried changing compatibility to
Windows ME/Win 98 but that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Do a virus scan, using the latest definitions.

You have a virus. Your McAfee wasn't kept up to date or wasn't installed
on ME and you've carried the virus over from ME to XP. Since the virus
probably broke McAfee, you need to scan with another av. A standalone
scanner like Stinger (also by McAfee) is good. It only looks for around
30 of the most common viruses, but it doesn't require installation. Get
the infected machine off the Internet and any lan. Here's a link for
Stinger:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Scan in Safe Mode.

After Stinger identifies the virus, if you need more help in cleaning it
up, go to McAfee's database or www.sarc.com and look it up. You will
probably have to uninstall and then reinstall McAfee. See their website
for any special instructions pertaining to that.

Good luck,

Malke
