Soft Back Slash

I am preparing procedure manuals which refer to filenames in very long paths.
Each path has several backslashes in it and this can cause a lot of the path
to appear on a new line, with lots of white space at the end of the previous
line. Because the paths are hyperlinks, I do not want to insert spaces to
make the lines break more logically because the links would not work.

Can anyone tell me how/whether I can create a soft backslash (similar to the
soft/hard hyphen principle), please? I know this is possible in WordPerfect,
but cannot find any help in Word. I am using Word 2003.

Thanks in advance.
