up until a week ago i was sending and receiving mail without a problem, now
when I sen I am getting
"The connection to the server has failed. Subject '', Account: 'John
Wilson', Server: 'mail.bespokemachines.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"
I am using port 587 because this works with my btinternet account but
nothing seems to work with my other isp.

Any ideas?

My first impression is that the server name looks dodgy,
I can find no trace of it using Google, but...

1. who is the other ISP?
2. which anti virus program have you installed?

Windows Mail is notoriously sensitive to AV scanners,
particularly Norton and McAfee.

If you are using either uninstall it entirely and
use a free Vista compatible alternative such as
Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

(don't install the superfluous email scanning component,
see more detail... http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 )

Another factor may be a message stuck in your outbox.

If you have that problem...

Use Dr. Cochrans Elixir....

The following utility, if used in accordance with the
program operating instructions, will free up your outbox
and let you send mail again.

You can't just go changing the SMTP port number unless the provider
of that server has told you to do so. I rather doubt that the
mail.bespokemachines.com server supports port 587. That server name
is an alias for mail.freestart.plc.uk. You may want to ring up Freestart
and ask them which SMTP ports they support. Or, you could simply
substitute the btinternet SMTP server. Your correspondents will never
know the difference.

Thanks for that information, Julian. I'm trying to set up a new computer for
my daughter with me as the administrator. I activated some parental controls
and then set up an email account for her and me. I had trouble sending email
from her account, so, after reading your post, I disabled the parental
controls and the Norton email scanning. I was then able to send email from
her account, but it won't receive. The error message reads:

Account: 'Olivia's mail', Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR authorization not enabled', Port: 110, Secure(SSL):
No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I have had no trouble sending and receiving from my account. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

First, you need to uninstall Norton, not just disable it.
Next, go to Tools, Accounts, select the comcast.net account,
Properties, Servers, make sure "Log on using Secure Password
Authentication" is not checked.

Thanks, Gary, I'll try that and download the other AV program you suggested.
But why does the mail work when I'm on my account and not when I'm on my
daughters? Question though, if Nortan AV program is not compatible with
Vista, why do Dell and MS push it in the sales process?

Probably because Norton pays them to do it.
