So far disappointing.......

Eric Dummett

Brand new Pentium dual core laptop with 1 Gb RAM and Vista Basic. Have NOT
installed any apps. Installed all required Windows updates. Only hardware
device installed was a brand new USB drive so that I could move datafiles
from my old Pentium II, 128Mb RAM laptop running XP Pro SP2, IE 7, and Media
Player 11. Over three weeks I have LOST TRACK of the BSODs. No consistancy
to the BSOD; ten minutes, ten hours, not for days. Error message indicates
its either (1) large file transfers from secondary media, such as an external
hard drive, to a local hard drive (2) loss of power to a hard disk drive that
causes inconsistent data sectors.
(3) problems entering Hibernation or Standby Mode or (4) hard drive lag
caused by filter drivers, such as virus scanners. Have run memory tests and
CHKDSK. Have rechecked power settings. Physically checked drive to see that
it was seated properly. About one (1) hour ago I upgraded the BIOS.

What's disappointing is I can't remember the last time my beat up old laptop
crashed. And while I'm not ready to jump on the "hate Vista" bandwagon just
yet, I'm glad that this entire package is in my hands and not a customer !

Constructive suggestions, not grousing - PLEASE !

Vista uses more RAM then XP. 1GB is bare bones.

Some AV programs suck it up. Which one are you running?

My first two thoughts are to stop using the external drive and see if
that fixes the problem. And if you are trying to use sleep mode
don't, turn off that option and don't ever put it to sleep, either
turn it off completely or leave it on. It's also possible you have a
bad HD in your laptop. I had a laptop a couple years ago that acted
very similar to what you describe and it turned out to be the HD going
bad.

Did you install Vista, or did it come preinstalled?
You might try reinstalling it, since you don't have any apps installed.

Ask Francis (Frank). He's always full of "constructive suggestions".

Cheers.

"Over three weeks I have LOST TRACK of the BSODs."
Return the laptop as defective. I hope you used a credit card.
