snmp configuration

Graham Turner

was hoping if someone could give us a few "clues" as to how to approach the
task of setting snmp configuration by group policy

the snmp configuration values (community strings et al ) does not appear to
be in the GPO UI so i would guess some sort of registry manipulation by GPO
would be the order of the day here ??

TIA

Hi Graham-

These settings are configurable in Windows 2003, but not Windows 2000. The
settings are located in GPEDIT.MSC at the location of Computer
Configuration->Administrative Templates->Network->SNMP.

Please repost if that doesn't fit your needs.

Tim, thanks for your post reply.

The Active Directory is Windows 2000 at the moment.

this seems to be one of the many things that Microsoft have "put right" in
Windows 2003 ?

Hello Graham,

You can add templates from other OSes into the console, also Windows 2000
with SP4 will have some of the new entries that are included in Windows
2003.

Hi all-

I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that this will work fine for most
settings which may configure registry based settings, as I beleive the SNMP
ones do.

It may be important to keep in mind that some settings require a client side
extension which supports processing the 'new' setting in policy, and not all
client OSs may have that. Just something to keep in mind as you import the
2003 templates and use them in a 'down-level' environment.

One question in reference to this: when I create
Communities in a GPO for my clients, how do I assign
security to them (READ/WRITE, READ ONLY, etc...). I can't
seem to find that. Thanks.
