Snag replacing PATA with SATA drive

Mobo: GA-8KNXP non-Ultra v1 (875p chipset)
P4 2.8C (not overclocked)
2gb Kingston CAS3 RAM
XP-Pro (all updates)

Next week I'll hopefully be replacing my Maxtor PATA C: drive with a SATA
(WD Raptor), cloning with Norton Ghost 2003, and I've run into a snag. I
enabled the "On-chip SATA" (presumably the ICH5R controller) in the bios
(f9) and the RAID function, but XP-Pro didn't pick up any new hardware or
ask for any drivers after enabling these options.

I then downloaded the ICH5R driver v3.5.2.2654 from the Gigabyte site and
ran it, getting the following error message:

Incompatible hardware. This software is not supported on this chipset.
Please select 'Yes' to view the Readme file for a list of supported
products. Refer to Section 2 titled 'System Requirements.'

Checking System Requirements in the Readme file, it states that I must have
a P4 processor and an "Intel 82801ER I/O controller." I also tried the v3.5
driver (for XP only) with the same result.

What am I missing here? Is the "On-chip SATA" the same as the "Intel
82801ER I/O controller"? The SATA drive is expected on Monday or Tuesday
and I'd like to have everything ready to install before that time.

Gigabyte has their own RAID, which would not depend on ICH5R. Just a guess.

Do you see Intel 82801ER in Device Manager after installing INF update?

This is the "On-chip SATA" controller, which is a part of the chipset.
Right? Anyway, the driver I ran came from a section in the Gigabyte RAID
driver section for this mobo called "Intel ICH5R." I could also connect
this drive to the Silicon Image 3112 controller, but why not use the on-chip
controller?

I have the 82801EB in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, but not an 82801ER. I
assume the latter should be in the SCSI and RAID Controller section.

Well, there you go. You have the non Raid version.

I have the RAID version and have sorted it out. In the bios, the "On-chip
SATA" should've been set to Manual, not Auto. When this is done WinXP picks
up the 82801 SATA RAID controller, installs it, and asks for drivers. The
82801EB was the IDE controller, and the 82801ER is placed in the SCSI and
RAID controller section of Device Manager.

The 82801EB was the IDE controller,

According to Intel:
Intel ® 82801EB I/O Controller
Hub 5 (ICH5) / Intel ® 82801ER
I/O Controller Hub 5 R (ICH5R)

The 82801EB is the nonRaid version southbridge ICH5
The 82801ER is the Raid version southbridge ICH5R
Both have SATA and IDE ports and are virtually the
same except for the raid capability.

The SATA controller reports a different device ID
for ICH5 (24D1) and ICH5R (24DF).

Apparently the bios is able to make the ICH5R appear
as the ICH5.
