Hi,

I'm having a question about setting up SMTP server with Windows 2000 server.

Is it possible to use only Windows 2000 server to send messages out to
internet, without installing any email server program such as MS Exchange? I
mean, with only Windows 2000 server installed, can I just enable the SMTP
service and allow computers connected on the same network to use it as a
SMTP server to send message out?

Thanks,
Ed

AFAIK, you don't need the SMTP service at all. Every Windows
PC can send messages by using appropriate mail client programs.
Some of them are command line driven, e.g. mailto.exe, sendmail.exe
or blat.

In fact, misconfiguration of the SMTP service will elave you vulnerable as
an open-mail relay. Be very careful messing with this. And it doesn't help
you with anything that can receive a mail. YOur solution would be outbound
and transit only.
