SMTP server not responding

I was in the middle of sending a relativley large email, which contained
photos, and a message kept popping up that read: "your SMTP server has not
responded for 60 seconds." and it asks if i would like to stop or wait
another 60 seconds. the load bar was continuing to fill, but very slowly.
Why was I not able to send my email?
 
What was the size of the email attachment?
The most common cause for that problem is interference from an
antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:
