SMTP Problem

Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 Server with SP4 and all recent patches that we use for
Backup.

After a backup runs, it sends an alert via SMTP to the users letting them
know the job ran sucessfully.

The software communicates on Port 25 of our SMTP server. The problem
happens every few days or so without any real reason.. All of a sudden, the
users aren't getting alerts.

When I check the server, I try telneting into our SMTP server (or any SMTP
server for that matter) on port 25 and the screen just connects, then
disappears.

Rebooting seems to fix the problem temporarily. I can't seem to figure out
where the problem is. I checked Port Monitoring software to make sure
nothing else was tying up that port, but didn't seem to find anything.

Any advise?

Have you checked the event log on the SMTP server to see if there's a reason
the service is encountering problems?

nothing in active ports in terms of using the port number.. what else could
it be?
