SMTP Out problems

I don't turn off my computer (XP, 2 Gig RAM, Dual XEON) very often. Last
night, everything was working peachy keen. This morning, can't send email
out. No changes that I'm aware of, and my Anti-Virus definitions are
up-to-date with no weird things happening in the logs.

I'm getting the following SMTP error:

Task 'mydomain.com - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is
unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider (ISP).'

ISP Claims everything is fine on their end...

Any suggestions?

Check your server settings - if all else fails, uninstall and reinstall your
mail account.

Can you actually REACH their mail server? Can you ping it?

ping <IPname>

When you use the IP name for their mail server, does ping report that it
cannot find the server? If so then the following would also fail:

nslookup <IPname>

If ping and nslookup can find the IP address given the IP name, then
check if you can actually connect to the mail server using telnet. In a
DOS shell (i.e., command prompt), run:

telnet <IPname> 25

Port 25 is the default port for SMTP. If your ISP uses a different port
for SMTP traffic then use that port number. The point is not to see if
you can perform a mail session with their SMTP server but rather to just
check if you can get a session at all. If you cannot get telnet to make
a connection then your e-mail client will never be able to get one,
either.

Try starting Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe") to see if
perhaps a plug-in is causing the problem (Tools -> Options -> Other ->
Advanced). Try using a different e-mail client, like Outlook Express,
to see if you can successfully send e-mail using that one.

If you have anti-virus software scanning outbound e-mails or a firewall
then try disabling them temporarily and then try sending some test
e-mails. Also try using msconfig.exe to disable all startup programs or
try rebooting into Safe mode (with networking) to see if you can then
send e-mails.
