Indeed, whenever you uninstall CAT's or Omegas on the next reboot WinXP
detects a VGA compatible device and suggest finding drivers for. This can
and should be ignored...just click cancel. That is, DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT to
install standard VGA-drivers, it will not be successfull nor do you need
them for anything. Just proceed directly to CAT or Omega -driver install.

Yeah, well I've been doing what you've written above for quite a while
now. That didn't work the 10 times I tried it, so I thought why not
follow advice and do what the instructions tell me? Can't hurt to try
everything. Turns out that didn't work too... :-(

Question: when you ran DC, did you run Cab Cleaner, first? I'm using the
3.9's and smartgart installs, every time (I swapped drivers cuz Asus modded
the 3.9's but still had the boot issue so went back to Cat's). And, don't
worry about doing the 'standard VGA' thingy. That's hit or miss. XP has an
issue with that, and these newer cards.

Um....according to my knowledge, there was no Cab Cleaner bundled with
the Omega drivers (I seriously didn't see any util like that).
I sort of guessed about the standard VGA thing after my 3rd try to
install the standard driver :)

Maybe I should run CC before I run DC, but to tell you the truth, I
couldn't give (quoting a Friends episode) a tiny rat's ass about it.
I am more than frustrated.

Oh...and Splinter Cell seems to work ok now. It seems that the freaky
light effects and shadows come only when lights are close to the
ground. Then everything lights up like its day.

I'm talking about DRIVER CLEANER. If you look, in the start menu, there is
a shortcut for CAB CLEANER. Run it, first, before Driver Cleaner.

LMAO ok!

Evidently, nobody knows how to properly remove drivers "while the hardware
is still active in the computer".
Boot to safemode, then uninstall all display drivers.
Reboot, hit F8 right after the Bios finishes, and select "Enable VGA Mode" -
this is the generic VGA driver built into Win XP that nobody seems to know
about.
Once booted into Windows, then install your drivers for your card.

It makes little, to no, difference. And, you've waste your time booting
into safemode.....

Well...I'll probably give it a try when I feel brave enough...
For now, I can live with the screwed up textures. They don't hurt the
game THAT bad...
LMAO ok!

LOL...
Well, the thing is...I had installed and started to play that game
when it first came out (and I have an nVidia). After some time, I just
lost interest in it and didn't have much time on my hands too.
Now, my exams were on, and I just needed a game to get into and relax
and forget about my problems.
I already have all the latest games installed....LOL..in fact, I have
more than 50 new games which I have bought but haven't played as yet.
Never seem to get the time...though I love collecting :-D
And if you take into account the number of abandonware games that I've
downloaded from the net, the number goes through the roof! (around 650
something)

I just got Call of Duty today, with NFS Underground, Fifa 2004,
Contract JACK, etc. I've installed it but I know I won't play it right
away. Probably after another 2-3 weeks. I am actually waiting for the
CoD patch to be integrated into Cat 4.0 drivers.
That way I also have Halo, Homeworld2, Max Payne 2 and Freedom
Fighters installed, in addition to other games, and I haven't even
touched them. LOL.
