Smart Tags in Word linked to Excel cells

Has anyone experienced placing Smart Tags, which is linked to a cell of an Excel file, in the middle of a sentence. Once the 'Match Destination Formatting and Link to Excel" is selected a carriage return is added and the Smart Tag field moves to the next line down. Manipulating it into the sentence again and updating the field causes it to move to the next line again. I checked all the options for the field, but didn't find anything to correct the problem. Can anyone shed some light on this

Hi =?Utf-8?B?Q0FaYW5vd2ljaw==?=,

I'm not sure we understand the same thing with the term "Smart Tag". A
real SmartTag is not a field, and you can't move it, or place it. The
so-called "Recognizer" (programmed in a DLL) places SmartTags in text
according to a series of characters it's programmed to react to.

What is this thing you call a Smart tag meant for? What does it do?
