Small Box cannot be deleted

When opening a new page, a user sees a small black box (which prints) instead
of a paragraph marker. It is not a border around the text. I cannot find
any odd formatting in the "normal". The "normal" is set to Arial 11 with
Widow and Orphan control. The style is normal. This box does not appear
when the user opens other existing documents ... only when she opens a new
one.

Is there some odd setting I should be looking at, or could her normal.dot be
corrupt?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A guess: could the small black box be a square bullet that has been applied
to the Normal style in her Normal.dot? (because the style has been set to
bulleted). The problem is most likely that she has somehow stored the "item"
in her Normal.dot. See:
