If the machine behaves properly doing everything else except Age of
Empires:

1. Go to the Age of Empires website and make sure you've got any
patches. There may also be links to user forums, tech support FAQ's,
etc. which you could check out.

2. Make sure your computer meets/exceeds the minimum system requirements
for the game. It sounds like you have onboard video and that may not
work with the game.

3. Make sure you have the most recent drivers for your video and sound.
Get drivers from:
a. The card mftr.'s website; OR
b. The motherboard mftr.'s website if onboard video; OR
c. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.
